The role
We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Chief Engineer - Virtual Engineering to lead our digital engineering initiatives in the automotive sector. The role encompasses CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering), CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to drive virtual product development, optimise vehicle performance, and accelerate time-to-market for Nortons' Exciting projects
By combining deep technical expertise with leadership skills, guiding multi-disciplinary teams in creating predictive and efficient digital models that inform design, validation, and production decisions.
You will oversee the day-to-day running of a busy team and work closely with the entire vehicle and powertrain design teams to ensure Norton’s remains at the forefront of design and engineering integration.
This role will report to the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) and handle creating this exciting project of building the department in a constructive way.
Duties/Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead and manage the Virtual Build Engineering team across CAE, CFD, and FEA disciplines.
- Drive the adoption and development of advanced simulation methods to optimise vehicle performance, durability, and safety.
- Collaborate with design, vehicle engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure simulation-driven design is fully integrated into the product development cycle.
- Establish best practices, methodologies, and standards for virtual testing and simulation.
- Evaluate and implement emerging simulation tools and digital engineering technologies.
Strategic Impact
- Define the virtual engineering strategy aligned with business objectives and product programs.
- Contribute to the digital twin development and virtual validation processes.
- Provide technical guidance and decision support to senior management on vehicle design, development, and optimisation.
Team & Talent Development
- Mentor and develop a high-performing team of engineers and specialists in CAE, CFD, and FEA.
- Promote a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Build strong relationships with external partners, vendors, and academia for cutting-edge simulation techniques.
Project & Program Delivery
- Ensure timely delivery of high-quality simulation outputs supporting vehicle programs.
- Analyse complex engineering problems, provide solutions, and drive design iterations efficiently.
Maintain accountability for the accuracy, reliability, and validation of simulation results.
Personal Specification
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical, Automotive or Motorsport industry.
- 10+ years of experience in automotive engineering, with significant exposure to CAE, CFD, and FEA.
- Proven track record of leading virtual engineering or simulation teams in a high-volume automotive environment.
- Hands-on experience with leading simulation software: ANSYS, Abaqus, LS-DYNA, Star-CCM+, HyperWorks, or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of vehicle dynamics, structural mechanics, thermal and fluid systems.
- Experience integrating virtual engineering processes into vehicle development programs.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
